About The Backstreet Nomad

Hey, I’m Luke, founder, blogger and editor of The Backstreet Nomad travel blog. I’ve been passionate about exploring our world ever since I traded in the ledger for a suitcase and a beer in 2010. I left my cushy accounting job to travel and ‘study’ (in that order) across England and Europe. Since then my adventures have taken me all over to to Canada, the United States, the Caribbean, the Pacific, Indonesia, and New Zealand, as well as finding time to explore up and down my own East Coast of Australia.

After reading back through my earliest travel journals there was a theme apparent: that most trips as a beginning traveller focused on the obvious attractions. While not inherently bad (being that these obvious sights were the draw cards in the first place, right?), it has since left a longing to revisit these places and understand more of the cultures, the wider country and to discover the unknown.

Above all, I learnt that flights are not always the best way to explore, even if sometimes it is the cheapest.

A passion for travel has evolved into a passion for finding the road less travelled, as it is often what is most unseen that is the richest treasures and leaves the longest memories.

Through this blog I hope to discover some of your favourite places in the world and share some of my own.

This blog has existed in its current form since about 2014, I started journaling my European study vacation on a small Blogspot site in 2010, but I believe I’ve always been a travel writer. My earliest memory of this was on a school excursion to the Blue Mountains in grade 5. I took a tiny notepad and paper and wrote down things that happened on the trip. I wish I still had it, but I’m sure it said something simple like “Next we went to the Three Sisters, which are some large rocks off the cliff. Then we went to Jenolan Caves” etc etc. Basic, but travel writing in its purest form.

If you’ve been somewhere special and want to share it with me, you can use my contact page to email me.

If my mission resonates with you and you’d like to be kept in the loop with my story, sign up for my newsletter. I’ll also send you some of my downloadable guides that you can take anywhere and a photography ebook.
